The amount of radiation emitted by an object increases with temperature
Thermography allows one to see variations in temperature
All objects based on their temperatures emit infrared radiation
Viewed with the infrared camera, warm objects stand out against cooler
backgrounds.
You get a visual picture so that you can compare temperatures.

Thermography or infrared scanning to detect thermal defects and air leakage
in building envelopes.
Thermograms help determine whether a building needs insulation and where in
the building it should go. Because wet insulation conducts heat faster than dry
insulation, thermographic scans of roofs can often detect roof leaks.

Able to find deteriorating components prior to failure. Measurement in areas inaccessible or hazardous for other methods. It is a non-destructive test method
Nondestructive testing (NDT), also called nondestructive
evaluation (NDE) and nondestructive inspection (NDI),
is testing that does not destroy the test object. NDE is vital for constructing
and maintaining all types of components and structures.
Aside from test equipment, training is the most important investment a
company will make in an infrared inspection program. Advances in technology have
provided infrared equipment that is user-friendly; however, infrared
thermography is not a "simply point and shoot" technology. In addition to
understanding the object or system being inspected, thermographers must also
understand common error sources that can influence observed thermal data.
Typically, infrared training courses should cover the topics of infrared theory,
heat transfer concepts, equipment selection and operation, how to eliminate or
overcome common error sources, and specific applications.
Heating and cooling account for about 56% of the energy use in a typical U.S.
home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes.
In addition to using thermography during an energy audit, you should have a
scan done before purchasing a house; even new houses can have defects in their
thermal envelopes. You may wish to include a clause in the contract requiring a
thermographic scan of the house.
